Basics of Visual Merchandising

Video Module 6: Visual Merchandising

Visual Merchandising is the art and science of displaying products in a way that attracts customers, communicates the brand, and increases sales. It focuses on how the store looks, how products are arranged, and how customers feel when they walk inside.

  1. Store Layout:- StoreLayout is the way a store’s space is arranged to guide customer movement and display products effectively. A good layout makes shopping easy, improves product visibility, reduces crowding, and increases sales.
  2. Window Displays:- The first impression of the store. Creative window designs help attract walk-in customers by showcasing new arrivals, themes, or promotions.
  3. Product Presentation:- How products are arranged on shelves, racks, tables, and walls.

Key methods: Front-facingdisplay, Color blocking, Vertical/horizontal displays, Rule of 3 (grouping items)

  4. Signage & Communication:- Clear, attractive signs help customers understand prices, offers, categories, and store navigation.
    Types: promotional, directional, branding.
  5. Lighting:- Lighting highlights products, sets the mood, and influences buying behavior.
    Types: ambient, accent, task, decorative.
  6. Props & Theme Setting:- Props help create storytelling displays. Seasonal themes (Diwali, Christmas, Summer, Wedding) boost customer engagement.
  7. Focal Points:- A Focal Point is the main spot in a display that immediately attracts the customer’s eye. It highlights the most important product or message and guides customers to notice what the store wants to promote first.
  8. Planograms:- A Planogram (POG) is a visual diagram or map that shows where each product should be placed on shelves, racks, or displays inside a store. It ensures consistency, better product visibility, and organized merchandising across all store locations.
  9. Cleanliness & Maintenance:- Cleanliness & Maintenance refer to keeping the store environment neat, organized, safe, and well-maintained at all times. A clean store creates a positive shopping experience and reflects the brand’s professionalism.
  10. Customer Experience:-
